October – the month when folks embrace tricks and treats – unfortunately did not disappoint when it comes to cybersecurity scares for organizations from fast fashion to fast cars. While no industry or entity is immune, a secure file transfer solution, such as GoAnywhere MFT, is one user-friendly, critical layer of cybersecurity to consider adding to your data breach defense strategy to help protect business-critical files as they are exchanged.
Fast Fashion Site Owner, Zoetop Fined Nearly $2 Million Over Breach Response
Fashions have already changed since 2018, but fast-fashion powerhouse, Shein’s owner, Zoetop, was recently fined $1.9 million because of its response to a data breach in that year. The fine addressed the failure of Zoetop to notify the majority of 39 million Shein customers who had their account login details, including credit card information, stolen and sold by hackers.
According to the New York Attorney General's office, Zoetop failed to safeguard customer data and failed to inform millions of account holders their personal information had been exposed. In addition, they substantially misrepresented the size of the breach, notifying only a fraction of those affected by the retailer’s data breach.

Toyota Data Leak May Impact 300,000 Customers
Nearly 300,000 customers of Toyota recently were advised that they may have had their personal data exposed as an access key was available publicly for nearly five years. The automaker noted that they did not have evidence the data was actually accessed, but they also could not rule out the possibility.
The leak was caused by part of the source code of its T-Connect side being uploaded to and left on GitHub. This code contained the access key to a data server, which contained customer information. Toyota immediately took action to make this code private, but the incident stresses the need for strong encryption protocols throughout the data lifecycle.
In addition, customers were advised to be on the lookout for any potential phishing emails that might occur as a result of the data leak.
Ransomware Gangs Continue Targeting Industrial Segment
According to a Dragos Q3 analysis, 36% of recorded ransomware attacks were on industrial organizations in North America, with more ransomware groups continuing to enter the scene, increasing the risk of even more attacks. The majority of incidents (68%) were found in the manufacturing sector.
As the article in Dark Reading notes, as more organizations in the manufacturing sector move key business operations to the cloud, new attack surfaces are opened.
Putting cybersecurity tools, like secure file transfer solutions, that offer flexible deployment options for on-premises, cloud, or hybrid configurations is one defensive step organizations in any industry can take to help mitigate risks to sensitive data being targeted by ransomware criminals.
